Painting the scene with light

A single lamp from below turns a friendly face menacing; soft window light makes it tender. Filmmakers shape mood with light and exposure the way a painter uses a brush — light isn't just to see by, it's to feel by.

You are painting with light

A camera records light, and how much light reaches the sensor — the exposure — is controlled by three linked settings: aperture (how wide the lens opens), shutter speed (how long it stays open), and ISO (the sensor's sensitivity). Change one and you often compensate with another. Together they are the exposure triangle.

A wider aperture (smaller f-number) or slower shutter lets in more light. Each step is one stop — a doubling or halving.

Three-point lighting

A classic setup uses three lights: a key light (the main, from one side), a fill light (softer, opposite, to lift shadows), and a back light (behind, to separate the subject from the background). Adjusting their balance changes the whole mood — hard and dramatic, or soft and gentle.

  1. Imagine a single lamp as your key light on one side of a face. Describe the shadows.
  2. Add a fill light on the other side. How do the shadows change?
  3. Now remove the fill and lower the key: what mood does the harsher light suggest?
  4. Match a mood (cheerful, mysterious, tense) to a lighting choice and justify it.
