Quantitative history (cliometrics) applies statistics to sources like census records, price series, and parish registers to test claims at scale. Digital history extends this with computation — text mining thousands of documents, mapping historical geographies with GIS, and building searchable databases that reveal patterns no single reader could see.
Numbers still require a historian's judgment: sources have gaps and biases, and correlation is not cause. Quantitative and qualitative methods work best together.
Text-mining a century of newspapers can chart how a word's usage shifted — but a historian must explain why, from context the data alone cannot supply.
