Writing the rulebook after the rebellion
Colonists broke from a king they felt taxed them without a say, then faced a harder task: agreeing on the rules for governing themselves. The Constitution was that carefully argued rulebook, built to prevent any one person from becoming the king they'd just left.
From colonies to a constitution
American colonists protested being taxed by a Parliament they could not vote for — 'no taxation without representation.' The Declaration of Independence (1776) broke with Britain; the Constitution later built a government of three branches.
Checks and balances
Legislative, executive, and judicial branches each limit the others so no one branch dominates.
