Numerical Integration

Approximate an area with slices.

What you'll learn

  • Understand numerical integration
  • Apply it to real examples
  • Check yourself with a quiz
Measuring an odd-shaped lake

You can't integrate a lake's outline by formula, so you slice it into thin strips and add their areas. Numerical integration approximates any curve's area with sums of simple shapes.

Rectangles and trapezoids

The trapezoidal rule approximates the area under a curve by summing trapezoids. More slices means less error.
