One pizza cut into 8 slices — you eat 2, so you had 2/8, which is the same as 1/4 of the whole pie. Slicing the same pizza into more or fewer pieces changes the numbers but not how much you actually ate; that's equivalent fractions.
Parts of a whole
A fraction a/b means a parts out of b equal parts. Equivalent fractions name the same amount written differently — multiply (or divide) top and bottom by the same number.
1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 (×2, ×3 on top and bottom)
3/4 = 0.75
Set the denominator (parts) and numerator (filled). Try 1/2 then 2/4 — the bar fills the same amount.
- Set the bar to 1/2 and note how full it is.
- Now set it to 2/4. Compare the fill.
- Try 3/6 and 4/8 too.
What you should see: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, and 4/8 all fill the bar halfway — they are equivalent fractions.
