Stretching the rubber band
Pull a rubber band and it stretches then snaps back — up to a point. Stress is the pull per area, strain is how much it stretches, and their ratio tells you how stiff a material is.
Stiffness and limits
Stress is force per area; strain is fractional deformation. Young's modulus (stress/strain) measures stiffness. Past the elastic limit, damage is permanent.
