Why the ramp beats the stairs

Pushing a heavy box up a ramp is easier than lifting it straight up — you go a longer distance but with far less effort. Ramps, pulleys, and wheels all make the same bargain: trade extra distance for easier work.

Making hard jobs easy

A ramp (inclined plane) lets you push a heavy load up gently instead of lifting it straight up. It is easier, but you travel a longer distance — the machine trades distance for less effort. A pulley uses a wheel and rope to change the direction of your pull, so you can lift a load by pulling down.

  • Inclined plane: a slope that reduces the effort to raise something.
  • Pulley: a grooved wheel with a rope that redirects (and can multiply) force.
  • Wheel and axle: turns a small effort at the rim into a strong turn at the center.
