Parts of Speech

Nouns, verbs, adjectives, and more.

What you'll learn

  • Identify nouns and verbs
  • Spot an adjective
  • Label a word's part of speech
Jobs on a film set

On a film set everyone has a role — actor, director, lighting. Words work the same way: nouns name things, verbs do the action, adjectives describe. Parts of speech are just the job each word plays in a sentence.

Words have jobs

  • Noun — a person, place, thing, or idea (dog, city, courage)
  • Verb — an action or state (run, is, think)
  • Adjective — describes a noun (red, tall, gentle)
Test it

If a word names something, it's likely a noun. If it shows action, it's a verb.
